A Community Development Financial Institution (or CDFI) is a mission-driven financial institution or lender that seeks to create economic opportunities for individuals and small businesses in under-resourced communities. CDFIs — which can be either in-person or online lenders — work with rural, urban, Native, and other communities that mainstream finance typically ignores. They offer financial education, business coaching, and low interest-rate loans that help increase their clients’ economic development potential.
